It is best to minimize the use of those kitchen appliances that are heat-generating, such as your stove and dishwasher. When using an electric stove, turn off the burners a bit before you're done cooking as the burners will stay hot for awhile. You will save energy by using a microwave or toaster oven in place of your conventional oven, too. Switch to the "Air Dry" option on your dishwasher and prop open the door shortly after the last cycle.
There are several things you can do to save both energy and money when it comes to doing your laundry. An important safety measure as well, cleaning your lint filter after EVERY use will run the dryer at its' optimal efficiency. Run your dryer loads consecutively to avoid the necessity of heating up the appliance for every load, and put your clothes through an extra spin cycle to help reduce the amount of time needed for drying. Many of the newer dryers have an automatic moisture sensor which will automatically shut off the dryer once its' contents are dry. If your machine has this great feature, make sure to use it! You can realize additional savings when you use cold water in the wash and rinse cycles.
Are your refrigerator door seals tight? Here's how to find out: Place a piece of paper or dollar bill so that it is partially inside the refrigerator. Close the door. If you can pull the paper or bill out easily, you may need to adjust the latch or replace the seal. Reducing the temperature in both your refrigerator and freezer by 10 degrees will save you about 25% of the cost to run the appliance each month.
Use compact fluorescent light bulbs throughout your home, but, remember, have them on only when you need them! This is considered one of the most efficient ways to save both energy and money around your home!
Additional insulation in your attic will save you money on utility bills. Period.
These are just a few suggestions that you can do, whether you own your home or are currently renting. You won't find any of them difficult to do, so give them a try. And let me know what you save!
