Roof and Gutters
Check roofing shingles for damage (loose, missing or blistered shingles need attention).
Drainage for melting snow is very important; clean your gutters of all debris.
Check the gutters, downspouts, hangars, gutter guards and strainers for leakage, misalignment and other damage, and make sure they are secure. (Make sure the downspouts direct water a fair distance away from the foundation.)
Check the caulking around any openings (such as vents, pipes, chimney) to keep out any bugs or small animals, as well as the cold, rain and snow.
Check flashings around roof stacks, vents, chimney, and skylights for leakage.
Trim tree limbs that are extending on or over the roof.
Check antenna supports as they can be a possible source of leakage.
Check to make sure your skylight closes securely and close any ventilation flaps.
Check for signs of water damage and/or leakage in the attic.
Doors and Windows
Check the caulking and weatherstripping around all windows and doors.
Remove, clean and store your screens. Install clean storm windows.
Exterior Walls
Check all siding and trim for damage, looseness and decay.
Trim shrubbery against exterior walls.
Check to make sure the sump pump discharge is not obstructed and releases away from the foundation.
Plumbing
Drain all exterior water lines, hose bibs, sprinklers and pool equipment.
Drain and put away all garden hoses.
Winterize inground sprinkler systems.
Electrical
Check the bulbs on your outside lights and replace any that you think may not make it through the winter.
Miscellaneous
Winterize your lawn mower, preparing it for next spring.
Prepare your snowblower by changing the oil, cleaning air filters and replacing the spark plugs.
