FALL INTERIOR HOME MAINTENANCE TIPS

By Marge Harris

The interior of your home deserves your attention - especially before the winter begins! Reviewing this Fall Home Maintenance Checklist ahead of the cold weather, will provide you with the "comforts" of home throughout the season.

TIP: Plan to review this checklist in the early part of the season so that you will have an opportunity to contact a professional in the event repairs are necessary.

Plumbing

Check for water leaks throughout the house. Consider such areas as visible piping, the dishwasher, clothes washer and hot water heater. Insulate any pipes in unheated areas to avoid freezing.

If your home is on a septic system, have the tank cleaned (every other year is a good rule of thumb, depending on usage).

Electrical

Check all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

A fire extinguisher is a tool every home should have. If you have one now, make sure it is fully charged. If you don't have one, get one!

Now is a great time to check the condition of electrical cords and plugs throughout the house. Consider all small and large appliance electrical cords and extension cords used throughout the house. Replace any that have the slightest look of wear or damage.

Heating and Cooling

Have your furnace and humidifier serviced and filters changed or cleaned.

Remove any window air conditioning units.

Miscellaneous

Close the vents in your crawl space.

Check all bathroom tile joints and tub grouting and caulking to make sure all are sealed. This prevents damage to the walls, floors and ceilings below.

Check the underside of your roof in the attic for water stains, leaks and condensation.

Remember to set your ceiling fans to direct air up.

This is a great time to maintain your appliances! Vacuum the condenser coil and clean the drain pan of your refrigerator. Clean the food filters in the dishwasher. Clean the cooktop and oven. Remove the filter of your rangehood fan and clean it according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Clear your dryer vent, which when clogged, is a fire hazard.

Consider installing a programmable thermostat to automatically adjust the temperature in your home at the hours you desire.

Replace any broken or cracked windows.
